Infections Different causes Infections Consult vet: Help possible or not possible, depending on cause, perhaps extermination of the whole stock, frequently also improvement of water and food quality, reduction of stock density
Virus, bacteria, fungus, parasites, insufficient water quality, too big stock density, insufficient food qualitiy, for instance white spots disease, ascites, fungal disease, fin rot Different causes Depending on causes: discolouration, additional formations, vestibular disorder, swimming manners not appropriate to the species, shortness of breath, rubbing and scratching movements, emaciation, reluctant feeding Best possible water quality, best possible food
Self-Medication
The best self-treatment is to avoid fish diseases: Maintenance of good quality of water, fish population adequate to the size of the aquarium and feeding appropiate to the species.

Zurich Animal Protection Society   Emergency situations
Fishes kept in an aquarium are more frequently subject to emergency cases than other domestic animals. For, the water is for the fish what the air is for he human being. The degree of acidity of the water (pH value), the hardness of the water, the nitrite-nitrate content and the gases out of the air dissolved in the water (oxygen and carbon dioxide) have to be just right. Danger for the fishes arises if the plants grow in a bad way or if the water is dirty and full of algas. In this case the nitrite-nitrate-content gets out of order which disturbes the degree of acidity in the water so that the fishes have to come to the surface of the water to gasp for breath. There is the risk then to lose the whole stock.
