| Hedgehog: Most frequent diseases. Vet Dr. Tiger gives information and advice. |
Traffic is one of the most frequently occuring causes of death of the hedgehogs. Observations have shown that hedgehogs crossing the streets do not roll in when surprised by approaching vehicles but try to escape.
The hedgehog who in the summer is especially active at night is, therefore, extremely endangered, because he penetrates far into the cities and only in those built-up areas he lacks what he needs for life: Open areas such as meadows where he finds food and covered areas with shrubs and heaps of branches where besides food he also finds hiding places and nest-building possibilities.
At the beginning of winter, underweight, weak and sick animals meet their death because they cannot retire for hibernation in good time and provided with the necessary energy reserves. Besides the traffic, all kinds of poison in house and garden also represent a danger for the hedgehogs. Biological pest control is, therefore, advisable.
